To kick things off for State Championship week, the Sully Buttes Chargers faced off with the Faulkton Area Trojans in the 9B game. It started essentially with a fake punt pass from Wes Wittler to a wide open Lucas Arcoren who took it inside the Faulkton 20. Wes Wittler would walk (or dribble) it in for the TD on the next play as a fumble bounced right back up to him on his way into the end zone. That drive set the tone for the game as Wittler would deliver four more touchdowns for his guys and they would go on to win 34-14. Gavin Barber continued to catch the ball effectively out of the backfield with two more touchdowns. This is the Chargers first State Championship title since 1989. Bo McGee was named the games most outstanding lineman and Wittler was named most outstanding back and the game’s MVP.
In the late game, two 11-0 teams in Hamlin and Parkston clashed as the Trojans looked to defend their 2023 9AA State Title. The game started quick with scores from both teams, Kolter Kramer broke off a huge run early as it felt like Parkston was picking up right where they left off. But Hamlin’s defense bowed up and didn’t allow another score for the rest of the game. Hamlin would go on to score 32 total points and win the Championship 32-8. This makes it 2-0 for the Chargers on the day!
