Job Title: Potter County Auditor
Brief Position Summary: The successful candidate will serve as the Appointed Potter County Auditor to
complete the incumbent’s term of office, which ends in 6 March 2026. A listing of required duties is
detailed below.
Minimum Qualifications: A background in accounting, with a thorough knowledge of accounting
procedures required by the South Dakota State Auditor General. An ability to manage and supervise
people, including a cheerful attitude and ability to work with others. General knowledge in computer
applications.

Duties will include:
- Serving as the clerk of the board of county commissioners and keeping an accurate record of its
official proceedings, including board of equalization hearings, as required by SDCL 7-10-1. - Carefully preserving all of the documents, books, records, maps, and other papers required to be
deposited or kept in his/her office as required by SDCL 7-10-1. - Preparing and maintaining accounting records, using the accounting method prescribed by the
auditor general; including, but not limited to:- Processing payroll; updating benefits calculation, managing workflow of all employees,
onboarding new hires, etc. - Establishing levies, including levies for all taxing entities and multiple school levies, and
ensuring the valuations balance with records held by the Director of Equalization as part
of the procedure for preparing annual tax bills. - Apportioning all tax collections.
- Processing abatements and advance taxes, and
- Preparing and maintaining the County budget, including providing monthly detailed listing
of Department budgets to Elected Officials and Department Heads, and a quarterly
dispatch budget. - Accept and disperse all costs of prosecution, jail fees, court appointed attorney fees and
all other fees imposed by criminal court judgments and maintain necessary records for
proof of payment and amount owed.
- Processing payroll; updating benefits calculation, managing workflow of all employees,
- Preparing all required reports; including, but not limited to:
- A written report of all cash and cash items in the hands of the county treasurer to the
board of county commissioners at each regular commission meeting, showing bank
balances, the total amount of actual cash, the total amount of checks and drafts which have been in the treasurer's possession not exceeding three days, and a written itemized
report of all cash items, checks, and drafts which have been in the treasures’s possession
over three days as required by SDCL 7-10-3. - A written annual report of revenues and expenditures of the previous year and the
assets, liabilities, and equity of the county as of December thirty-first of the previous year,
due by the first day of March of each year. The report shall be made in the form
prescribed by the auditor-general and shall be published within thirty days in the official
newspapers of the county. A copy of the publication shall be filed with the auditor-
general, as required by SDCL 7-10-4. - A written annual report for Department of Revenue on tax dollars collected.
- A written annual report for E-911 monies.
- A written report of all cash and cash items in the hands of the county treasurer to the
- Acting as clerk at all sales of school lands and keeping a complete record of such sales and
forwarding a certified copy of the record to the commissioner, as required by SDCL 5-9-9. - Process & maintain titles and licenses for all county vehicles, and vehicles belonging to approved
volunteer fire departments. - Process & maintain yearly Uniform Alcoholic Beverage License Applications, Malt Beverage & SD
Farm Wine Renewals and Liquor & Wine License Renewals for the Potter County businesses. - Coordinate and oversee county contracts, including negotiation of contracts when necessary.
- Performing all the duties required by law relative to County, State, and Federal elections, to
include:- Maintaining voter registrations and election records,
- Delivering notices of special and general elections,
- Ensuring election ballots are properly formatted and printed, and that sample ballots are
available for review, - Providing for and distributing absentee ballots,
- Mailing to each official newspaper of the county a copy of all measures and questions as
certified to the auditor pursuant to § 12-13-1 on or before the first day of October of each
year when there is a general election. - Arrange for and set up polling places
- Arrange for delivery of ballots to all polling places
- Making abstracts of and canvassing the votes cast at any special or general election,
- Issuing certificates of election to members of the Legislature, county, and precinct
officers, and forwarding the abstracts of votes cast at general or special elections to the
secretary of state, as required by SDCL 7-10-5.
- All other duties as required by statute or as assigned by the County Commission.
REPORTS TO: Potter County Commissioners
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Occasional reading and close-up work;
- Normal hand and eye coordination;
- Dexterity-Frequent holding, reaching; grasping; occasional repetitive motion;
- Frequent writing and/or typing;
- Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing of normal speech and talking in person.
- Frequent concentration, and decision making,
- Frequent public contact and working alone;
- May be required to reach with hands and arms;
- Requires long periods of sitting and/or standing;
- Lifting- occasional 5 to 30 lbs. or less.
- Occasional stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Wage and work year will be established by the Potter County
Commissioners.
