The Pierre Governor boys basketball team picked up a second win to start their season Saturday afternoon with a 62-56 victory over Rapid City Central. Pierre got off to a good start hitting three 3-pointers in the first period as they sped out to a 19-8 lead. They kept that 11-point advantage at halftime, 33-22, and continued to lead by double figures for most of the game. A furious rally by the Cobblers in the game’s final two minutes cut the lead down to four at one point, but Luke Olson sank nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win. Olson led the Govs with 17 points while Corde Austin added 14. Gilbert White, Jr., led Rapid City with a game high 21 points including 16 in the fourth quarter comeback effort. Pierre hits the road next weekend with matchups at Sturgis Friday night and Spearfish Saturday afternoon. Coverage of both games can be heard on RIVER 92-7 FM and seen at https://drgnews.com/river.
The girls got their first win of the season to wrap up the Rapid City road trip with a 56-38 win over the Cobblers. Against two great players in Chloe Shreve and Leah Landry, the Govs defense was daunting from the tip recording 16 total steals. After a loss against a top Rapid City Stevens team, the Govs shook it off instantly getting out to a 15-2 lead. The Cobblers fought back late in the first quarter to make it a three point game, however, a theme that would be common throughout the game. Emery Larson had a pair of threes to lead Pierre in scoring with 19 total. Lennix DuPris also played a huge role putting up 13 while also tallying 7 steals on the defensive side. Grace Richter didn’t light up the stat sheet only taking five shots, but she was tasked with guarding Leah Landry, doing a masterful job holding her to 8 points and forcing 31 Cobbler turnovers. The Govs improved to 1-1 in the early season and will take on Sturgis 12/20 at 7:00 PM back at home.
