A Watertown man was sentenced this week (March 19, 2025) on Attempted First Degree Murder and First Degree Burglary charges connected to a crime that occurred in August 2024.
Marcus Weber showed up at the female victim’s residence and attempted to kill her by dragging the victim out of the home by her throat and stomping on her face. The victim, identified in court documents with the initials D.W., was bleeding profusely from the face when medical personnel arrived.
The victim, who sustained catastrophic injuries, was in court to read a victim impact statement. She said Weber no longer has control over her, and spoke of how a longstanding abusive relationship with him had developed.
Weber pleaded guilty to the charges in January 2025. He spoke briefly in court apologizing for what happened, and said he must take responsibility for his actions.
The judge sentenced Weber to 25 years in prison on the Attempted Murder charge, with credit for 214 days spent in jail. On the Burglary charge, Weber was given 25 years in prison, with 15 years suspended. The sentences will run consecutively.

January 29, 2025:
A Watertown man has admitted to trying to kill the mother of his children last year.
Marcus Weber appeared in Codington County District Court Wednesday morning (Jan. 29, 2025), pleading guilty to felony counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and First Degree Burglary.
Codington County State’s Attorney Alison Bakken told the court that on August 16, 2024, Weber showed up at the victim’s residence and in a premeditated manner, attempted to kill her.
Bakken says Weber, “dragged the victim out of the residence by her throat and began stomping on her face.”
Bakken said when medical personnel arrived on the scene, they found the victim, identified by the initials D.W., “bleeding profusely from the head and face.”
Bakken said the victim sustained, “catastrophic injuries” that required extensive medical treatment.
When asked by Judge Carmen Means what he remembered about the incident, Weber said he, “blacked out” and doesn’t remember threatening to kill her.
Judge Means ordered a pre-sentence investigation, and scheduled Weber’s sentencing for 9 a.m. on April 2nd.
Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in the South Dakota Penitentiary, and a fine of up to $50,000.
