February 12, 2025:
The South Dakota Department of Revenue will launch its Motor Vehicle Division’s new 605Drive title and registration system next week (Feb. 17, 2025) In preparation for that, the Hughes County Treasurer’s Office will stay open until 5pm CT on Thursday (Feb. 13, 2025) to allow tax payers extra time to process motor vehicle transactions.
Hughes County Finance Officer Thomas Oliva says the Hughes County Treasurer’s Office and Auditor’s Office will both be closed to the public from Feb. 18-21, 2025, to allow for staff training on the new 605 Drive Motor Vehicle System. The offices will resume normal business hours Feb. 24. He asks Hughes County tax payers to please plan accordingly and to have patience with staff as they transition to the new system.
According to the state Department of Revenue, the transition to the new system will occur in three phases:
-
As of Feb. 7, registration renewals are not available on mySDCars.gov or at the DMVNow Kiosks. Registration renewals are still available at county offices through Feb. 13 at 7pm CT. However, state officials recommend checking with your county treasurer’s office to see if they have an earlier stop time to work through their end-of-day processes. The current SDCars system will no longer be available for use after February 13, 2025.
-
Between February 14 – 16, 2025, motor vehicle transactions, including title transfers and registration renewals, will not be available. During that same time, the system transition will also delay a dealership’s ability to transfer a title and a financial institution’s ability to release liens.
-
The new system will launch on February 17, 2025. Access to registrations will be available at county treasurer offices, DMVNow Kiosks, and through the new online platform, whose link can be found on the Department’s website at dor.sd.gov by clicking “Vehicle Registration and Plates” under Online Services.
The DOR recommends that vehicle owners scheduled to renew license plate tags in February do that early to avoid any delays.
