PIERRE – A task force to help determine the safety of resuming high school activities and athletics in South Dakota is set to meet again on Thursday. South Dakota High School Activities Association Executive Director Dr. Dan Swartos is part of that task force, which includes medical experts, state officeholders and school administrators.
Swartos described the biggest question that must be answered before activities and athletics can begin again.
Swartos said that parents must have assurance that testing will be consistent statewide.
According to Swartos, high-contact sports bring the largest concern.
Swartos said that the national governing body for high school sports has allowed modifications, specifically for football.
Swartos said that administrators must be ready to change plans quickly if there is another outbreak of COVID-19.
Swartos and others want the flexibility of delaying activities to another part of the school year if needed.
Swartos said that he has recently visited with other state high school activities directors.
Swartos was asked whether the SDHSAA or local districts will issue guidelines for spectators.
