Southeast Technical College is accepting applications for the Horticulture Career Academy, a unique dual-credit program designed for high school students interested in exploring careers in horticulture, landscaping and related fields. With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, real-world experience, and direct pathways to employment, the program offers students the chance to jump-start their futures-and earn money while doing it.
Through a blend of classroom instruction and outdoor lab work, students explore key topics in plant science, landscape design, greenhouse operations and pest management. The program is taught by industry professionals on Southeast Tech’s campus and provides students the opportunity to earn up to 3 college credits while still in high school.
In addition to gaining college credit and practical skills, students in the Horticulture Career Academy have paid work-based learning opportunities. These experiences allow students to earn while they learn-building confidence, professional connections and a solid resume before graduation.
“This program is all about giving students early access to a career they can grow in,” said Benjamin Ringling, Horticulture instructor at Southeast Tech. “They’re not just reading about plant science-they’re in the greenhouse, they’re designing landscapes, and they’re working side-by-side with professionals. It’s real-world learning that makes a real difference.”
The program has already helped launch the careers of several students who now work in landscaping, greenhouse operations, and agricultural services across the region.
