SIOUX FALLS, SD – Jason Kotilnek,45, of Sioux Falls died unexpectedly after a short illness on Saturday, April 19th at his home in Sioux Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, April 24th at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with a viewing one hour prior to the service.
Born on July 18, 1979, in Pierre to his beloved parents, Tom and Cecelia (Schofield) Kotilnek. Growing up in Pierre with his sister Gina and brother Jon, Jason’s life was marked by a deep capacity for connection and a vibrant spirit. He graduated from TF Riggs High School in 1998, where his love of music, his ability to bring laughter, and the strong bonds of friendship he forged were already evident. He was a unique soul – intensely loyal, deeply emotional, wonderfully stubborn, and possessing a truly unforgettable sense of humor.
Following high school, Jason pursued his passion for understanding how things worked at Western Dakota Vo-Tech in Rapid City, earning an Associate’s Degree in Electronics. Eventually, this led him to establish Coffee Medic, his own small business in Sioux Falls where he expertly serviced coffee and espresso machines for large corporations like Starbucks and Caribou Coffee. This endeavor showcased his remarkable knack for tinkering and fixing things, a talent he so generously extended to those he cared about. These talents were a direct reflection of him being his father’s son.
Jason’s passions enriched his life and the lives of those around him. Music resonated deeply within him, and he shared this love with others, introducing them to genres that became lifelong companions. His fascination with saltwater fish aquariums reflected his patient and meticulous nature. He also found enjoyment in collecting knives and the detailed work of painting small metallic figurines.
Above all, Jason cherished his role as a father to his daughter, Abigail. He was a warm, funny, and fiercely protective dad. He was unwavering in his support for his daughter, showing up for her in every moment of need, no matter how inconvenient. He went out of his way to ensure she felt happy, healthy, and deeply loved. To her, he was a constant safe haven—someone she could always turn to when the thought, “I need my dad,” crossed her mind—and he was always there.
Jason is survived by his loving daughter, Abigail Kotilnek; his devoted life partner of nine years, Tyanne Autumn Pearson; his cherished mother, Cecelia Kotilnek; his sister, Gina (Scott) Hickenbothem; his brother, Jon (Pati) Kotilnek; and his niece and nephews: Max, Ben, Thomas, and Hanna. He is also remembered with love by numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Kotilnek; his grandparents, Joe and Mary Ellen Schofield and Roger and Kathryn Kotilnek; and his uncles Vincent Schofield, Tim Riggins, and Joe Prouty, as well as his cousin Michael Schofield.
Even years after high school, the impact Jason had on those close to him remained profound. He was the kind of person who, once he let you in, did so wholeheartedly, offering unwavering loyalty and honest emotion. He had a knack for knowing when to offer support and when a bit of humor could lighten a heavy moment. His protective nature made those he cared about feel safe, and his willingness to simply be present, spoke volumes about his caring heart. He was a steady and dependable presence in the lives of many.
Jason will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know his unique and loving spirit. The memories of his laughter, his loyalty, and the genuine warmth he shared will be held close in the hearts of those who loved him.
