May 12, 2025:
One man died and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening (May 7, 2025, 5:56pm), five miles north of Nisland, SD.
Preliminary crash information indicates 22 year old Darin Michael Hanson of Nisland, the driver of a Chevrolet S10, was traveling south on Beet Road near its intersection with Reid Road. A Dodge Dakota, driven by 24 year old Joseph Lane Hanson of Nisland, was traveling east on Reid Road, approaching Beet Road. The driver of the Dakota failed to yield, entering the intersection and was struck by the S10. Both vehicles came to rest in a drainage ditch.
Darin Hanson was ejected from his vehicle and flown to a Rapid City hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Joseph Hanson sustained fatal injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Preliminary crash information indicates the 22 year old male driver of a Chevrolet S10 was traveling south on Beet Road near its intersection with Reid Road. A Dodge Dakota was traveling east on Reid Road, approaching Beet Road. The 24 year old male driver of the Dakota failed to yield, entering the intersection and was struck by the S10. Both vehicles came to rest in a drainage ditch.
