The death of George Floyd (May 25, 2020) at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, has put the actions of law enforcement agents under a global spotlight.
In response to Floyd’s death, President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month (June 16, 2020), to improve policing in the United States. The order aligns with Trump’s creation of the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice back in October (2019).
South Dakota Department of Public Safety Secretary Craig Price is a member of the Commission. He says the group is looking at some of law enforcement’s long-standing practices through new lenses.
Price is serving on three subcommittees covering topics especially relevant in South Dakota.
He says South Dakota is a small state and all law enforcement agencies work well together.
Price says law enforcement entities in South Dakota do well, but are also watchful for ways to improve.
The Presidential Commission was established to do a system-wide review of the criminal justice system and develop a plan to provide guidance to all levels of government (federal, state, local and tribal).
