The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into reports of multiple assaults involving inmates this week (May 27, 2025) at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
Attorney General Marty Jackley said the assaults were reported around 1pm Tuesday. There were no injuries to prison staff, but five inmates received stab wounds. Three were transported to Sioux Falls hospitals, and the other two were treated inside the prison. He said other inmates were injured by assaults involving fists, feet and homemade blunt objects. An estimated 10 inmates were injured.
Jackley said the assaults occurred at the same time in different sections of the Jameson Annex and evidence suggests the assaults were gang related. He said those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
DCI is working with the South Dakota Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General on the investigation. All reports will be reviewed by the Attorney General’s Office for potential criminal prosecution.
