Discussion of the 2026 budget was on the agenda at Tuesday’s (July 22nd) regular meeting of the Walworth County Commission, including recommendation of a $1.45 hourly increase in wages for county employees. The commission examined each department’s budget needs for the coming year.
Sheriff
The commissioners looked over the Sheriff’s Department June reports, and they approved a travel request for two employees to attend a fall conference in Watertown at the end of September.
Emergency Manager
A travel request for the Emergency Manager to attend the South Dakota Emergency Management Association conference in Sioux Falls in September was approved.
Landfill
Commissioner Duane Mohr had the monthly report from the Landfill.
Mohr also told the board about a new proposal received from North Central Steel on the landfill building project.
Mohr was of the opinion that the amount is still too high and made a motion to reject all bids and start over with the bidding process. The motion was approved. And under Old Business on the agenda, the board okayed Mohr working with Dean Marske of HKG Architects to re-advertise for bidding on the landfill building in the Mobridge and Selby papers.
Auditor
Walworth County Auditor Kim Dills said the County had balanced books again in the month of June and gave the amount.
Also at the meeting, Commissioner Randy Carlson brought up the subject of the jail and making a decision on where it should be located.
Commission Chairman Jim Houck questioned the jail study’s recommendation of Mobridge as the location.
It will be on the agenda for more discussion at the next Walworth County Commission meeting in August.
