At 6:17 a.m. Saturday, US Highway 16, mile marker 45: A 2018 Jeep Wrangler (Unit 1) was traveling east on US Highway 16 at approximately MM 45. Unit 1 left the roadway to the right into the ditch, continued eastbound in the ditch, vaulted slightly off a private driveway, hit a mailbox, and crashed through a couple highway signs before coming to a final rest in the ditch. Both driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts. The driver was transported to Rapid Monument to be evaluated for minor injuries. The passenger was not injured.
At 8:22 a.m. Saturday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 49: A 2024 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling eastbound on US 14A near MM 49 when he failed to negotiate a right curve. The operator applied the brakes and laid the motorcycle down prior to striking the metal guardrail and post. The driver of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and was transported via personal vehicle to Monument Health in Sturgis with minor injuries.
At 10:50 p.m. Saturday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 51: A 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was eastbound on US 14A near MM 51. A deer entered the roadway and was struck by Unit 1. The 2 occupants were separated from the motorcycle which slid into the left ditch. Both occupants were wearing helmets and received minor injuries.

At 7:47 a.m. Friday, Liberty Boulevard and Reagan Avenue (Box Elder): A 2025 Honda Pilot (Unit 1) was stopped at a stop sign on Reagan Avenue facing north. A 2015 Toyota 4Runner (Unit 2) was traveling south on Liberty Blvd. Unit 1 attempted to make a left turn to go north in front of Unit 2. Unit 2 was unable to avoid a collision in the intersection. The driver of Unit 1 was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 2 was wearing a seatbelt and received minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed.
At 9:00 a.m. Friday, US Highway 16A, mile marker 53: A 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling east bound on US Hwy 16A. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve and crossed the center line. A 1989 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2) was traveling west bound on US Hwy 16A near MM 53. When unit 1 crossed the center line he collided with unit 2 head on. The male driver and female passenger of Unit 1 were wearing helmets and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. The male driver and female passenger of Unit 2 were not wearing helmets and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. They were also transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
At 12:17 p.m. Friday, South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 77: A 2006 Victory motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling south on South Dakota Hwy 87 near MM 77. The driver failed to negotiate a left curve and slid off the roadway into the west ditch. The driver was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries.
At 6:34 p.m. Friday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 47: A 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling east on US 14A near MM 47. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and ran off the roadway to the right. Unit 1 slid on its side and the driver was separated from the motorcycle. The driver was wearing a helmet and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Deadwood Hospital.
At 11:00 p.m. Friday, South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 117: A 1986 Suzuki motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling north on South Dakota Hwy 79 when an elk entered the roadway. The driver was unable to avoid a collision. The driver of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to Monument Health in Sturgis.

**Update** At 12:50 a.m. Sunday, US 14A mile marker 52: At 12:50am Sturgis Police attempted to stop a 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle for exhibition driving near the Iron Horse Saloon. The motorcycle fled and Sturgis Police engaged in a pursuit. The motorcycle left the lane of travel at a high speed and entered the ditch at MM 52 on US 14A. The driver was transported by helicopter to Monument Health with serious life-threatening injuries. On Monday August 4th the 28-year-old male driver died from his injuries.
At 3:53 p.m. Thursday, South Dakota Highway 44 and Airport Road: A 2024 Honda CBR motorcycle (Unit 2) was traveling westbound on SD Hwy 44 toward Airport Road. A 2015 Toyota Tacoma (Unit 1) was eastbound on SD 44 preparing to make a left turn onto Airport Road. The driver of Unit 1 did not see Unit 2 and began to make a left turn. As Unit 1 was making the left turn, it was struck by Unit 2. The driver of Unit 2 was wearing a helmet. The 23-year-old male driver of Unit 2 was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. The driver of Unit 2 sustained fatal injuries. The driver of Unit 1 was not injured.
Injury Crashes:
At 10:19 a.m. Thursday, South Dakota Highway 34, mile marker 38: A 2023 Indian motorcycle (Unit 2) was driving westbound on SD 34 near MM 38, as he began to merge into the right lane, a 2025 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) came up from behind Unit 2 while also attempting to merge into the right lane. As Unit 2 passed Unit 1, the motorcycles side swiped one another. Unit 2 drifted into the north ditch and came to rest on its side. Both riders of Unit 2 became separated from their motorcycle. Unit 1 remained upright and pulled over to the shoulder of the road. The driver of Unit 1 sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Unit 2’s driver sustained a minor injury to his right leg, he was treated and released on scene, and the passenger was not injured. The passenger of Unit 2 was wearing a helmet. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.
At 10:32 a.m. Thursday, Interstate 90, mile marker 113: A 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling eastbound on I 90 near mile marker 113. Unit 1 had an equipment failure resulting in a rear tire rupture. Unit 1’s driver lost control and laid Unit 1 down. Both driver and passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. Both occupants were wearing helmets.
At 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Interstate 90, mile marker 18: A 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was driving westbound on I 90 near MM 18 when his front wheel began to wobble. The driver of Unit 1 tried to regain stability but was unable to. Unit 1 tipped over and the driver separated from Unit 1. A 2018 Chevrolet Malibu (Unit 2) was in the lane next to Unit 1 and was struck by the motorcycle after the driver of unit 1 was separated from it. Unit 1 and Unit 2 both came to a final rest in the median crossover. The driver of Unit 1 came to a final rest on the edge of the passing lane. The driver of Unit 1 was wearing a helmet and was transported to Spearfish Monument Health with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 11:30 a.m. Thursday, US Highway 16A, mile marker 39: A 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was eastbound at MM 39 US 16A. A 2023 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2) was westbound at this location. Unit 1 failed to negotiate the curve and crossed the double solid yellow line. Unit 1 struck Unit 2 causing them both to leave the roadway into the north ditch. The operator of Unit 1 was wearing a helmet and was transported to Monument Health in Custer. The passenger on Unit 2 was not wearing a helmet. She sustained serious injury and was transported to Rapid City Monument Health. The operator of Unit 2 was not wearing a helmet. He was treated and released on scene.
At 1:58 p.m. Thursday, South Dakota Highway 34 and South Dakota Highway 79: A 2017 Ford F350 (Unit 1) was stopped at a traffic signal facing southbound at the intersection of SD Hwy 34 and SD Hwy 79. A 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2) was traveling eastbound on SD Hwy 34 attempting to make a left turn on to SD Hwy 79. As Unit 2 made the turn he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the trailer of Unit 1. Unit 2 passenger sustained minor injuries and was transported to Monument Health Sturgis Hospital. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet.
At 4:37 p.m. Thursday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker 5: A 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was eastbound near MM 5 Wildlife Loop Rd. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a right turn due to the exhaust dragging on the roadway. Unit 1 lost control and laid the motorcycle down in the middle of the road. The operator of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and sustained a serious non-life-threatening injury. The driver of Unit 1 was transported to Custer Monument Hospital via ambulance.
At 5:02 p.m. Thursday, Nemo Road near Box Elder Forks Road: A 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was riding south on Nemo Rd and ran off the roadway. The driver was separated from his motorcycle, coming to a rest in a ditch. The driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries.
At 5:02 p.m. Thursday, Interstate 90, Mile marker 135: A 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Interstate 90 and struck the rear bumper of a 2020 Dodge Ram (Unit 2). Unit 1 ran off the road to the left and entered the median. Unit 1 traveled several hundred feet upright before it tripped and rolled. The driver of Unit 1 was separated from the motorcycle and came to final rest alongside Unit 1 in the median. The driver of Unit 1 was life-flighted to Monument Health with life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet.
At 11:25 p.m. Thursday, Interstate 90, Exit 37: A 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was stopped at the stop sign on the off ramp of Interstate 90 Exit 37 at its intersection with Pleasant Valley Road. A 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2) was southbound on Pleasant Valley Road. The driver of Unit 1 did not see Unit 2 and entered the intersection. Unit 1 collided with Unit 2. Both drivers separated from their motorcycles after the collision. The driver of Unit 1 sustained minor injuries and was not transported. The driver of Unit 2 sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Monument Health in Sturgis. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.

At 9:09 a.m. Wednesday, Vanocker Canyon Road, mile marker 12: A 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was southbound on Vanocker Canyon Rd near MM 12. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road to the right and went down the steep embankment where the motorcycle and driver came to a final rest. The driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet. He was transported to Rapid City Monument Hospital via LifeFlight with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 11:22 a.m. Wednesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 149: A 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling west on Interstate 90 near MM 149. The driver of Unit 1 failed to navigate the curve and entered the median. The driver became separated from the motorcycle and both came to final rest in the median. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, received serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Black Hills LifeFlight to Monument Health in Rapid City.
At 1:58 p.m. Wednesday, South Dakota Highway 44, mile marker 40: A 2006 GMC Sierra (Unit 1) was driving eastbound on SD 44 near MM 40 when the driver passed out due to a medical issue. Unit 1 drifted over the center line and into the path of a 2023 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2) that was driving westbound in the same location. The driver of Unit 2 saw Unit 1 coming toward him and swerved toward the right shoulder of the road to avoid the crash. Unit 1 hit the rear driver’s side saddle bag causing Unit 2 to spin around numerous times. The driver and passenger of Unit 2 suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing helmets. They were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. The driver of Unit 1 and a passenger were both wearing seatbelts and the driver was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City for evaluation.
At 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, US Highway 16/385, mile marker 37: A 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling eastbound on US 16 385 near MM 37. To avoid rear ending another vehicle, Unit 1 entered the south ditch and slid for several feet before rolling. The driver was separated from the vehicle. Unit 1’s passenger was pinned under the vehicle. Both subjects were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City for serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet, but the passenger was wearing a helmet.
At 3:17 p.m. Wednesday, US Highway 16A, mile marker 54: A 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) approached a curve at approximately MM 54 on US 16A. Unit 1 failed to negotiate the curve and struck the guardrail. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Monument Health in Rapid city for serious but non-life threating injuries.
At 4:39 p.m. Wednesday, US Highway 385, mile marker 95: A 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling westbound on US 385. Unit 1 leaned too far in a curve and hit its exhaust pipe, causing the motorcycle’s back tire to lift off the ground. Unit 1 lost control and hit the guardrail. Unit 1’s driver and passenger separated from the motorcycle. The driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. The passenger was wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries.
At 5:38 p.m. Wednesday, US Highway 85, mile marker 14: A 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on US 85 near mile marker 14. Unit 1 was attempting to stop and pull over with the group he was traveling with. As Unit 1 was braking, it struck soft road filler causing it to lose traction. When Unit 1 returned to dry pavement the brakes locked up. The driver became separated from the motorcycle and slid on the highway. The driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Lead-Deadwood Monument Health.
At 6:03 p.m. Wednesday, Interstate I-190 and Interstate 90: A 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling southbound on Interstate I-190 near its intersection with Interstate 90. The driver had a medical emergency and failed to negotiate the curve. The driver ran off the road to the right, struck a DOT sign, and laid his bike on its side. The driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained a minor injury to his head.
At 6:37 p.m. Wednesday, Norris Peak Road and Hat Mountain Drive: A 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on Norris Peak Road near its intersection with Hat Mountain Drive. Unit 1 hit an uneven patch of road and laid his bike down. The operator separated from the motorcycle, received serious non-life-threatening injuries, and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. The driver was wearing a helmet.

At 10:37 a.m. Tuesday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker 5: A 2023 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was westbound at MM 5 on Wildlife Loop Rd. Unit 1 got too close to the edge of the blacktop and drove off into the ditch to the north. Unit 1 remained upright until it hit debris in the tall grass and flipped forward. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Custer Monument Hospital with minor injuries.
At 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 32: A 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was eastbound at MM 32 US 14A. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a left curve and got close to the edge of the blacktop. The driver drove off into the ditch, tripped and rolled. The driver, who was wearing a helmet, became separated from his motorcycle and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was flown to Rapid City Monument Health Hospital.
At 01:29 p.m. Tuesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 170: Jackson County stopped a 2005 GMC Sierra near MM 170 on Interstate 90 for speeding. The deputy was speaking with the driver, who took off at a high rate of speed. The Deputy initiated a pursuit eastbound. The vehicle took exit 191 and traveled west on SD Highway 248. Tire deflation systems were set up near MM 190 on SD 248. The driver went into the ditch to avoid the tire deflation system and lost control. The vehicle rolled onto its driver’s side. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, received minor injuries, and was taken into custody without incident. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is handling all charges.
At 01:33 p.m. Tuesday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker 5: A 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling westbound on Wildlife Loop Road, got too close to the shoulder and the front tire went off the roadway. The operator and passenger were separated from the motorcycle. Both sustained minor injuries and refused transport. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet.
At 05:24 p.m. Tuesday, Pleasant Valley Road and S 130th Avenue: A 2012 Honda motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling west on Pleasant Valley Rd in front of a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 2). Unit 1 attempted to make a left turn into a driveway of a campsite. Unit 2 was behind Unit 1 and was unable to avoid the left turn being made by Unit 1. Unit 2 collided with Unit 1. The driver of Unit 2 sustained minor injuries. Neither driver was wearing a helmet.
At 09:03 p.m. Tuesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 12: A 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on I 90 near MM 12. Two deer entered the roadway, one deer struck the side of the motorcycle causing it to fall. The driver became separated from the motorcycle and slid on the interstate. The motorcycle came to final rest near the shoulder. The driver was wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Monument Health in Spearfish.

At 01:09pm, Monday, US Highway 16A, Mile marker 43: A 2019 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was westbound on US 16A attempting to navigate a sharp right-hand corner. Unit 1 scraped on the bottom/side of the motorcycle as it made the turn. Unit 1 slid out and crossed the solid yellow center line. A 2000 Indian motorcycle (Unit 2) and a 2008 Can-Am Roadster (Unit 3) were eastbound about to enter the curve. Unit 1 slid into Unit 2 and Unit 3 in the eastbound lane of travel. Unit 1 continued into the ditch. Unit 2 and Unit 3 remained in the eastbound lane of travel. The 60-year-old male driver of Unit 1 sustained fatal injuries. The female passenger of unit 1 sustained life-threatening injuries and was flown to Rapid City Monument for treatment. The drivers of Unit 2 and Unit 3 both sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and were both transported to Custer Monument Hospital for treatment.
None of the 4 persons involved were wearing a helmet.
Injury Crashes:
At 08:35am, Monday, Jolly Lane and South Dakota Highway 44: A 2011 Chevrolet Equinox (Unit 1) was traveling south on Jolly Lane. A 2012 Honda Accord (Unit 2) was traveling north on Jolly Lane near the intersection of SD Hwy 44. Unit 1 attempted to make a left turn on SD Hwy 44 from Jolly Lane. Unit 1 failed to yield the right of way to Unit 2. Unit 2 (Honda) continued straight through the intersection colliding with Unit 1 (Chevrolet) in the intersection. The driver of Unit 2 received minor injuries. The driver of Unit 1 was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
At 08:45am, Monday, US Highway 385, Mile marker 89: A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling south on US Hwy 385. This area is under construction with a grooved road surface. The motorcycle’s back tire slid out due to the wet roadway, the driver kept it upright going off the road to the right into the mud, came back to the road, and over the other side of the road before laying it down in the ditch. The driver was not wearing a helmet. He received minor injuries.
At 11:03am, Monday, South Dakota Highway 89, Mile marker 45: A 2019 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) motorcycle was traveling behind a 2024 Ford F150 (Unit 2) pulling a trailer on SD Hwy 89. Unit 2 attempted to turn left into a field approach. Unit 1 (Harley) attempted to pass Unit 2 (Ford) in a no passing zone as Unit 2 was turning. Unit 1 collided with the driver side of Unit 2’s trailer. The driver of Unit 1 was wearing a helmet and was transported to Custer Monument Health with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of unit 2 was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt.
At 12:17pm, Monday, Vanocker Canyon Road and Alpine Road: A 2006 Honda (Unit 1) motorcycle was traveling southbound on Vanocker Canyon Road near Alpine Road in Meade County. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and crashed. The driver was wearing a helmet, sustained minor injuries, and was taken to Sturgis Monument Hospital by ambulance.
At 12:32pm, Monday, South Dakota Highway 87, Mile marker 74: A 2012 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on SD 87. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve, slid off the roadway, into a guardrail. The driver was wearing a helmet, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries, and was transported to Monument Health in Custer.
At 12:49 pm, Monday, South Dakota Highway 87, Mile marker 62: A 2000 Indian motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on SD hwy. 87. Near mile marker 62 Unit 1’s driver failed to navigate a curve and rolled Unit 1 on its driver’s side. Unit 1 slid before coming to rest in the roadway. Unit 1’s driver was separated from the motorcycle and landed in the west side ditch, sustaining a serious non-life-threatening injury. The driver was not wearing a helmet and was transported by ambulance to Monument health in Custer.
At 12:57pm, Monday, US Highway 16A, Mile marker 51: A 2012 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was traveling westbound on US 16A near MM 51 and was entering a sharp right curve in the roadway. The driver of unit 1 was unable to negotiate the turn, entered the eastbound lane and collided with a 2002 Harley Davidson (Unit 2). The driver of unit 2 sustained minor injuries, was not wearing a helmet, and refused medical treatment on scene. The driver of unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and was not injured.
At 01:58pm, Monday, Vanocker Canyon Road, Mile marker 10: A 2011 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was traveling east on Vanocker Canyon Rd. A 2022 Harley Davidson (Unit 2) was traveling west on Vanocker Canyon Rd. Unit 1 crossed over into the westbound lane. Unit 2 was unable to avoid unit 1 and they side-swiped each other. The driver of Unit 2 sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and the passenger of unit 2 had minor injuries. They were not wearing helmets and were both taken to the Sturgis Hospital. The driver of unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and was not injured.
At 02:59pm, Monday, US Highway 16A, Mile marker 50: A 2006 American Ironhorse motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling westbound on US 16A near mile marker 50. As Unit 1 was passing motorcycles around a corner, the driver was unable to negotiate the curve. Unit 1 crossed the center line and left the roadway to the left. Unit 1 drove over the road edge and came to rest in the ditch. The operator of Unit 1 was not wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. The driver refused medical treatment.
At 04:11pm, Monday, Playhouse Road and South Dakota Highway 87: A 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was stopped at the stop sign on Playhouse Rd and SD Highway 87. Unit 1 laid the bike down and both occupants fell off the motorcycle. The bike sustained no visible damage. The passenger was transported to Custer Hospital with minor injuries. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet.
At 04:34pm, Monday, Nemo Road and Peterson Place: A 2007 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on Nemo Rd. Unit 1 was unable to negotiate a curve. Unit 1 then laid the motorcycle down and the driver separated from the motorcycle. Unit 1’s passenger was not able to separate themselves from the motorcycle. Both the driver and passenger sustained minor injuries. Unit 1’s passenger was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City. They were not wearing helmets.
At 04:38pm, Monday, Jackson Road and Plateau Loop: A 2024 Harley Davidson motorcycle (Unit 1) was eastbound on Jackson Road near Plateau Loop, 3 miles east of Whitewood. Unit 1 hit loose gravel and entered the ditch. Unit 1 and the driver became separated. The driver was wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was transported by ambulance to Spearfish Monument Hospital.
At 05:33, Monday, South Dakota Highway 87, Mile marker 56: A 2022 KTM motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on SD Highway 87. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve and struck the guardrail. The driver became separated from the motorcycle and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.
At 06:06pm, Monday, Vanocker Canyon Road, Mile marker 14: A 2005 Harley Davidson (Unit 1) was traveling northbound on Vanocker Canyon Rd. toward Sturgis. Unit 1 failed to negotiate the curve. The driver was not wearing a helmet and was life-flighted to Rapid City with life-threatening injuries.
At 06:10pm, Monday, Westview Drive near Westview Loop: A 1998 Dayton motorcycle (Unit 1) was westbound on Westview Drive near the intersection of Westview Loop. Unit 1 failed to negotiate a curve in the road. Unit 1 and both driver and passenger separated coming to final rest in the west ditch. The driver sustained life-threatening injuries. The passenger sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet. Both were transported to Spearfish Monument Hospital.

Traffic ahead of both units had slowed in the passing lane of I-90. A vehicle in front of Unit 2 cut off the motorcycle. Unit 2 applied the brakes causing Unit 1 to collide with Unit 2. Unit 1 (2007 Harley) overturned in the roadway. Unit 2 came to rest in the median. The male driver and female passenger of Unit 1 (2013 Harley) were separated from motorcycle. Unit 2 came to rest in the median of I-90. The male driver and female passenger of Unit 2 were not injured. The driver of Unit 1 sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and the passenger had minor injuries. Both were taken to the hospital in Sturgis. Neither driver was wearing a helmet. The passenger of Unit 1 was wearing a helmet.
At 01:00pm, Sunday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 49: A 2023 Harley Davidson motorcycle was navigating a curve in the roadway when the steering failed. The male driver laid the bike down to avoiding hitting the guardrail. The male driver and female passenger separated from the motorcycle as it began to slide. Both occupants were wearing helmets. Both individuals sustained minor injuries. The passenger was transported to the Sturgis Hospital.
At 02:01pm, Sunday, US Highway 385, mile marker 109: A 2007 Jeep Wrangler (Unit 2) was traveling north on US Highway 385, attempting to make a left turn onto Roubaix Lake Rd. A 2013 Yamaha motorcycle (Unit 1) was traveling south on US 385. The driver of unit 2 attempted to make the left-hand turn in front of Unit 1. The driver of Unit 1 was unable to avoid collision with Unit 2. The male driver of Unit 1 was wearing a helmet and was transported to Monument Health in Deadwood for minor injuries. The driver of unit 2 was wearing a seatbelt.
At 03:23pm, Sunday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 24: A 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling eastbound. A deer entered the roadway and Unit 1 struck the deer, causing the operator to lose control. The driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. The female passenger was wearing a helmet, received serious-non-life-threatening-injuries, and was air lifted via LifeFlight to Monument Health in Rapid City.
At 04:44pm, Sunday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker 1: A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on Wildlife Loop Road. The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and ran off the road to the left. The motorcycle struck a tree. The driver sustained serious-non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Monument Health in Rapid City via Life Flight. He was not wearing a helmet.
At 05:22pm, Sunday, South Dakota Highway 40, mile marker 37: A 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on SD Hwy. 40 around a curve. The motorcycle began to slide when it drove over gravel in the roadway. The driver ran off the road to the right striking a guard rail. The driver became separated from the motorcycle and came to rest against a barbed wire fence. The driver was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City via ambulance with serious non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet.
At 09:33pm, Sunday, Spring Creek Road near Arena Drive: A 2005 Honda motorcycle was traveling west on Spring Creek Road near its intersection with Arena Drive. The driver of the motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and entered the north ditch. The driver became separated from the motorcycle. At 09:34am, Saturday, US 16A, mile marker 56: A 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound in the passing lane of US 16A near mile marker 56. The driver was unable to negotiate a curve in the roadway and tipped onto its right side and slid into the eastbound lanes. The 2019 Harley Davidson collided with 3 motorcycles that were traveling east. The 58-year-old male driver of the 2019 Harley Davidson sustained fatal injuries. The east bound riders received serious non-life-threatening injuries. Helmet use for all 4 individuals is under investigation.
Injury Crashes:
At 09:26am, Saturday, US 16, mile marker 61: A 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle was turning North onto US 16 from the Happy Place Campground. The front brake locked up causing the rider to lay the motorcycle down. The driver and motorcycle fell onto the right side. The driver was not wearing a helmet. The rider of unit 1 was transported to Rapid City Monument hospital for minor injuries.
At 10:49am, Saturday, SD 44, mile marker 167: A 2013 Victory motorcycle was traveling west on South Dakota Highway 44. The motorcycle had a flat tire. As the driver was slowing down to pull over, he lost control and entered the ditch. The driver and passenger were separated from the motorcycle. They were not wearing helmets and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 2:26 pm, Saturday, I-90 westbound, mile marker 131: A 2015 Harley Davidson was traveling west on Interstate 90. The driver struck the rumble strips as they were negotiating the curve in the roadway causing the Harley Davidson to enter the median. After entering the median, the driver became separated from the motorcycle and came to rest in the median. The driver received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.
At 12:31pm, Saturday, SD 87, mile marker 62: A 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on SD 87 near mile marker 62. The driver failed to negotiate a left turn and ran off the roadway to the right. The motorcycle traveled up an embankment. The driver became separated from the motorcycle. The motorcycle fell on top of the driver. The driver was transported to the hospital via LifeFlight. The driver received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.
At 01:01pm, Saturday, SD 87, mile marker 67: A 2024 Harley Davidson trike (unit 1) was traveling north on SD 87 near mile marker 67. A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle (unit 2) was traveling south. The 2009 Harley Davidson crossed into north bound traffic and made contact with the 2024 Harley Davidson. The passenger of the 2024 Harley became separated from the motorcycle. The driver of the 2009 Harley was also separated from their motorcycle. The driver of the 2024 Harley was not injured. The passenger of the 2024 and the driver of the 2009 were both taken to Monument Health in Custer for minor injuries.

At 04:55pm, Saturday, I- 90, mile marker 41: A 2023 Harley Davidson (unit 1) was traveling west on I- 90 in the right lane. A 2024 Harley Davidson (unit 2) was also traveling west on I-90 in the left lane. Unit 1 attempted to pass Unit 2 and made contact with Unit 2. After making contact with Unit 2 the driver of Unit 1 lost control and entered the north ditch. The driver of unit 1 received minor injuries. The driver of Unit 2 was not injured. Both drivers were wearing helmets.
At 05:13pm, Saturday, SD 34 and Fort Meade Way: Unit 1, A Ford Escape was rear ended by Unit 2, a motorcycle, while stopped at a stop light. The motorcycle rider sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was flown to Monument Health in Rapid City. The motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet. The driver of the Ford Escape did not receive any injuries.
At 05:44pm, Saturday, US 14A, mile marker 43: A 2012 Ford F150 was stopped in the west bound lane of US 14A while waiting for traffic to make a left turn onto 2 Bit Road. A 2025 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on US 14A. The 2025 Harley Davidson collided with the rear-end of the Ford F150. The driver of the Harley Davidson received minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. The driver of the Ford F150 was not injured. The F150 driver was wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the Harley was not wearing a helmet.
At 06:40pm, Saturday, I-90, mile marker 41: A 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on Interstate 90 near mile marker 41. The Harley Davidson attempted to exit and realized that the road was closed. The driver laid the bike on its side and slid under the gate coming to a complete stop. The driver was transported to the hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.
At 12:44am, Sunday, SD 79, mile marker 113: A 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle (unit 1) was traveling south on SD 79 near mile marker 113. A 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle (unit 2) was traveling north on SD 79. Both motorcycles were straddling the centerline and struck each other. Unit 1 came to rest in the south bound lane of SD 79. Unit 2 ran off the road and came to rest in the ditch. Both drivers were transported to the hospital. The driver of unit 1 received life threatening injuries. The driver of unit 2 received serious non-life-threatening injuries. Both drivers were transported to the hospital. The driver of unit 1 was wearing a helmet. Helmet use is under investigation for the driver of unit 2.
At 12:50am, Sunday, US 14A, mile marker 52: At 12:50am Sturgis Police attempted to stop a 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle for exhibition driving. The motorcycle fled and Sturgis Police engaged in a pursuit. The motorcycle left the lane of travel at a high speed and entered the ditch at MM 52 on US 14A. The driver was transported by helicopter to Monument Health with serious life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.
