The ethanol industry says year-round E15 is a national security issue and belongs in the annual defense bill that’s being considered by Congress.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the push to make year-round E15 part of the defense bill has several backers and he expects one of them will be South Dakota Senator and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
“I would expect Thune to be very much for it. And I would think we wouldn’t be getting the opposition from the oil companies that we generally get.”
If year-round E15 doesn’t make it into the defense bill, Grassley says there’s another option they can try to make it happen.
“Now, if it doesn’t get in the defense bill, I would sure hope it’d get in at the end-of-the-year bill…and last year it was in until almost the last minute.”
Eight states– including Thune’s South Dakota and Grassley’s Iowa– already sell E15 year-round. Grassley says it’s easier to sell it everywhere and not have to change to summertime blends.
