Libraries across South Dakota are celebrating the joy of reading during November as the State Library launches “Storytime South Dakota,” an initiative promoting early literacy and family engagement.
State Librarian George Seamon says participating libraries will host special storytime events featuring the 2024-25 Prairie Bud award-winning book “Lou: A Children’s Picture Book About a Fire Hydrant and Unlikely Neighborhood Hero” by Breanna Carzoo. He says it’s a playful and empowering picture book that encourages children to discover their self-worth.
Seamon says reading is a fundamental skill so it’s important that parents foster the love of reading in children at birth and continue to support that skill in their throughout adulthood. He says reading to children not only cultivates a love of books at a young age, but also strengthens literacy skills that help children become confident, capable readers.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to contact their local library for details about any Storytime South Dakota events in their community. Each event will highlight the value of reading aloud and the role of libraries in supporting young readers.
