Brookings County Sheriff’s Office investigating structure fire in Volga

A Sunday morning (Nov. 16, 2025) fire engulfs a shop building in Volga.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office said it was reported as a possible house fire on Nov. 16 at 5:33 a.m. at the intersection of North Samara Avenue and Highway 14. The Volga Fire Department was the first on the scene and determined the fire was a large shop building used by the Vanderwal family for equipment storage and maintenance.

Additional fire units from Brookings, Bruce, Aurora, White, Elkton and Sinai also responded — as did Brookings Ambulance.

The sheriff’s office says crews were on scene for more than seven hours working to extinguish the blaze. The building housed four semi trucks, a skid steer and numerous tools and other equipment. A damage estimate was not yet available.

The fire is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
