Fort Pierre and Pierre are both getting multi-million loans from the state to make improvements to each town’s wastewater treatment facility.
Fort Pierre is getting a $3.7 million ($3,701,000) loan from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, while Pierre is getting a $15.3 million ($15,310,000) loan.
Improvements in Fort Pierre include rerouting wastewater flow through the lagoons, installing an aeration system to reduce Biological Oxygen Demand, adding additional treatment works to reduce ammonia concentrations, installing an ultraviolet disinfection system and modifying the discharge method.
Pierre’s wastewater treatment facility updates include installation of new grinding equipment, replacing the screen and grit removal systems, selection of pumps designed to pass solids and basin rehabilitation. The system upgrades will improve solids removal and handling capabilities and enhance equipment longevity and operational reliability.
Fort Pierre’s 2.125% interest, 30 year loan and Pierre’s 2% interest, 20 year loan will be administered through the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

- Brandon, $5,687,000 for drinking water system improvements
- Burke, $540,000 for drinking water system improvements
- Deer Mountain Sanitary District, $2,174,000 for drinking water system improvements
- Huron, $14,946,000 for wastewater system improvements
- Lake Norden, $671,000 for wastewater system improvements
- Westport, $352,000 for drinking water system improvements
The State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fund the Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program, which provides low-interest loans for wastewater, storm water and nonpoint source projects.
