The Pierre Governor girls made the trip west for the first game of two in Sturgis and Spearfish this weekend, and they took on the Scoopers Friday with an opportunity to move above .500 in the very young season.
The Govs came out firing early as Molly Olson and Emery Larson hit a pair of threes to give the Govs an early 19-12 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, Sturgis settled in on defense applying a suffocating full-court press that gave Pierre problems. The Governors would manage their way through the second actually padding their lead up to nine.
The third quarter belonged to the Scoopers, outscoring the Governors 23-9 and completely flipping the game. Seemingly everything was going wrong for Pierre from turnovers to simply bad luck. However, freshman Zoey Bauer checked into the game late in the third quarter and provided a much needed spark with a few steals and some outstanding defense that seemed to stop the bleeding. Pierre head coach Kirk Beebout has always noted how proud he was of his teams fight which was on full display in the fourth quarter.
The Govs turned the game back around outscoring the Scooper 21-7 in the final frame and holding on for the 55-48 victory. The Govs were led by Molly Olson who had 19-points, she also led the game in scoring and was named Player of the Game. Emery Larson, who was quiet early, finished with a strong 15-point performance.
The Governor Girls improve to 2-1 on the season and will wrap up the first part of their season before the break with Spearfish Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM CT on KGFX and streaming on DRGnews.com.
