MURDO, S.D. – The Lyman Raiders are the champions of the 58th Jones County Invitational Basketball Tournament after a 52-47 defeat of Stanley County in overtime Saturday night. The Raiders fell behind early as the Buffaloes set the pace with defense and sharp shooting. Stanley County led 16-4 after a quarter and 24-14 at halftime as the pace slowed a bit. The ten point lead for the Buffs held up after three at 35-25, but Lyman came to life in fourth quarter and eventually took their first lead on a 3-pointer from MJ Diehm with about a minute left in regulation. Lyman led 42-41 and added a free throw before Eddie Duffy hit a baseline runner to tie it with six seconds left. A shot by Diehm to win at the buzzer missed as the game went to extra time, but the Raiders outscored the Buffaloes 9-4 in OT to claim their first tournament title since the mid-2000’s. Diehm scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to spur the comeback win, while Dawson Volmer added 12, all in the second half. Duffy dropped in 19 and Paxton Deal 15 to lead Stanley County, who suffered their first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, White River finished a 2-1 weekend by topping Jones County for third place in the tourney with a 56-39 victory. Jones County led 13-12 after one quarter, but the Tigers settled in and took a 31-22 lead at intermission that they would not relinquish. Kreg Stoddard’s 18 points set the pace, and Trey Rattling Leaf added 12, including three bombs from outside the arc as the momentum shifted in White River’s favor in the second period. Bryer Kinsley tallied 19, but no one else scored more than six points for the Coyotes, who fell to 5-5 and placed fourth. White River is now 7-6 following the win.
