VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota women’s basketball honored its’ four seniors on Saturday following the game against North Dakota State Saturday in which the Bison earned a 81-68 win over South Dakota.
The Coyotes and Bison battled back-and-forth for a majority of the first half, with South Dakota taking a slim 30-28 lead into the intermission. The Coyotes opened the game on a 6-0 run before NDSU could get on the board, and never trailed in the opening 10 minutes.
Molly Joyce was a difference maker in the first half, totaling six points in the first quarter to help USD to a 14-11 lead after one. She finished the first half with 14 of USD’s 30.
A 7-0 run for the Bison gave NDSU its first lead of the game at the 3:16 mark of the second. After the two sides traded baskets, a 7-0 USD run, its longest of the game, gave the Coyotes a 30-26 lead.
The Bison came out of the intermission firing and hit 6-of-8 from three and 75% of their shots from the floor in the second half to open up a 20-point advantage with 3:30 to play. The Coyotes battled back for the final three-and-a-half minutes, but weren’t able to complete the comeback.
Molly Joyce finished with 24 points and Angelina Robles 22 for the Coyotes in the loss. The two combined for 14-of-14 shooting at the free throw line. Tori Schlagel pitched in nine points and Elise Turrubiates seven points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
The Coyotes shot 34.4% from the field and 20.0% from three, attempting a season-low five three-pointers. The Bison meanwhile shot 60.8% from the field and 41.2% from three. The Coyotes lost the overall rebounding battle, but won the battle for offensive rebounds, 12-4, and second chance points 10-6.
Following the game, South Dakota honored seniors Angelina Robles, Elise Turrubiates, Josie Hill, and Patience Williams for their time, effort, and commitment to South Dakota women’s basketball. All four players transferred to South Dakota this season and made their impact on and off the court.
South Dakota has two regular season games remaining as they head to Grand Forks to face North Dakota Wednesday and are in Brookings Saturday to face South Dakota State.
