State prison offender Verlyn Julius dies in custody

State prison offender Verlyn Julius has died.

Julius, age 83, passed away February 23, 2026, in a comfort care setting at Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield, South Dakota.

At the time of his death, Julius was serving a 35-year sentence for first-degree rape out of Minnehaha County.
