Faulkton Area and Sully Buttes have been seeing a lot of each other in postseason play. Of course, on the gridiron two seasons ago, the Chargers took down the Trojans in the DakotaDome for the State Championship. Then this season, the Trojans repaid the favor by knocking out the Chargers denying a back-to-back bid. Tonight, the Chargers got revenge, this time on the hardwood as they ended Faulkton’s season with a 55-44 region playoff victory.
Sully Buttes made a statement in the first quarter jumping out to a 19-8 lead in front of a raucous home crowd. The Chargers stuck to what had worked all season, outside shooting early in possessions and a healthy sum of looks from their key scorers.
Faulkton Area would weather the storm and settle in the second quarter cutting down the deficit to nine at the halftime break, the score 33-24. After the half, both teams would continue to trade baskets as Faulkton just could not close the double-digit deficit to anything closer than three possessions.
Sully Buttes would hold on and secure a spot in the SoDak 16, and now wait for tomorrow’s postponed games to be made up before they find out who their opponent will be.
The Chargers were led by Wesley Wittler who scored 29, Jett Yackley also finished with double-digits scoring 10. For the Trojans, Weston Senn had a nearly immaculate night from the floor going 9/13 shooting and scoring 18.
