March is paired with madness for a reason. A perfect example of that unfolded in Gettysburg Tuesday night between Sully Buttes and Dupree in arguably the game of the night.
This contest was highlighted by two outstanding defensive performances from both sides as each team held the other to single-digits in the first quarter. Sully Buttes would carry a small, four-point lead into the halftime break but both teams knew this one was far from over.
After some strong defensive adjustments at the halftime break, Dupree came roaring back outscoring the Chargers 16-10 in the third quarter and taking a two-point lead into the fourth. The fourth quarter was a mirror image of the first three, back and forth with both teams trading buckets. However, the biggest bucket of the night and season came for Sully Buttes with under a second left. After a steal off the inbound pass led to a game-tying bucket for Dupree, Wittler drove the length of the floor and found himself with his own rebound off a miss and just .3 seconds left. Wittler calmly dumped in the putback as the buzzer sounded and the Charger contingent went ballistic. Wittler’s bucket gave Sully Buttes the 42-40 win and secured their spot in the State Tournament.
Sully Buttes was led by Wittler who scored 19, Dupree was led by Jayden Marshall who scored an impressive 16 points.
The Chargers enter as the 7-seed and will face Freeman in the first round of the State Class B Tournament on 3/19 at 5:00 PM CT. You can catch the Chargers at State next week on KMLO and DRGnews.com.
