South Dakota maintains number of farms and ranches, acres in farms and ranches between 2023-24

The number of farms and ranches in South Dakota remained unchanged from 2023 to 2024.

According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, the total number is 28,300.

However, the numbers of farms and ranches in South Dakota with less than $100,000 in agricultural sales increased by 200 farms from 2023 to 2024, while operations with more than $100,000 in agricultural sales decreased by 200 farms.

Land in farms and ranches in South Dakota totaled 42.3 million acres, unchanged from 2023. The average size of farm or ranch is 1,495 acres, also unchanged from a year earlier.
