State prison inmate Perfecto Bernal dies in custody

South Dakota state prison offender Perfecto Bernal has died.

Bernal, age 69, passed away March 18, 2026, in the infirmary at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield.

At the time of his death, Bernal was serving a sentence from Pennington County for possession of a controlled substance.
