At the request of the Sioux Falls Police Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into an officer involved shooting that happened Tuesday (March 31, 2026).
Information from the Attorney General’s Office says 36 year old Richard Paul Olson, Jr. from Sioux Falls was wanted by federal authorities for violation of his federal probation for possession of a firearm by a felon. Members of the Sioux Falls Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit located Olson, Jr. Tuesday at a Sioux Falls gas station.
Olson Jr. exited a vehicle and later produced a weapon. Two officers fired their weapons. A weapon, believed to be in Olson, Jr.’s possession, was recovered at the scene. The suspect attempted to flee, but a police dog was deployed and apprehended Olson Jr., who sustained injuries due to dog bites. No one was injured by gunfire.
This is the second Officer Involved Shooting in South Dakota this year.
During its investigation, DCI will process the crime scene, conduct a forensic examination of all collected evidence, interview those involved, and review all available video. DCI will issue a summary once the investigation is completed. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are assisting. The Sioux Falls Police Department is cooperating in the investigation.
