Hughes County is hoping to get some federal dollars to help make repairs on West Bend Road.
County Manager Lori Jacobson said she and Highway Superintendent Nick Dooley are submitting a Notice of Intent for a Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities– or BRIC– grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to address erosion problems.
Commissioner Rob Fines, who worked as the emergency manager for Hughes County until he retired, asked Dooley how far the erosion has spread. Commissioner Tom Rounds also commented.
Jacobson said one of the challenges in addressing the erosion problem is that there are a handful of government entities involved.
West Bend Road is in the southeast part of Hughes County. It’s the primary route to access the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ West Bend State Recreation Area and its campground.
