The South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals will be held for the 77th straight year this week at the Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre, and the competition began yesterday afternoon, will continue today and roll all the way into the weekend with a schedule packed full of events.
Day one saw the Rodeo Queen interviews, horsemanship, contestant speeches and modeling at the Casey Tibbs Center. At the fairgrounds, the first go-round of boys and girls cutting was held with 12 total cowboys and cowgirls competing.
On the girls side, Arina Haugen out of Sturgis scored best with a 144 in her 1st go, with Kate Schiley out of Meadow close behind with a 142. Coming in with a 141 on the first go was Hot Springs’ Tessa Hammel. Not far behind those top three was Whitewood’s Lily Sexton who scored a 140.
On the boys side, Kadoka’s Dalton Grimes scored a 147 with his 1st go, giving him the top spot after day one. August Steele from Huron posted a 144.5 followed by Clay Stevens of St. Lawerence who scored a 143.
In the reigned cow horse, Sophie Hruby from Hemingford scored a 289.5 to lead after the 1st go. Kodaka’s Dalton Grimes continued his great start to the week with a 287.5, followed by Clay Stevens who scored a 284.5. Wall’s Riggens Cheney scored a 279 to cap of the first go-round.
The second go-round and championship go-round are scheduled to be held today along with reigned cow horse. Events began at 8:00 AM, however the championship round will be held this afternoon at 4:00 PM CT. Stay tuned to DRGnews.com for updates.
