PIERRE, SD – Steve Thompson, 75, of Pierre, South Dakota, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 15, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am, Friday, June 19th at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. For those unable to attend the service it will be live streamed through a link on his obituary page.
Steve was born on February 25, 1951, in Watertown South Dakota, to Theodore and Olga (Rislov) Thompson, Steve lived a life filled with dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.
Steve grew up in South Shore, where he attended school before pursuing higher education at South Dakota State University (SDSU). He graduated with a bachelor’s degree and embarked on a career that reflected his deep connection to the natural world. For over two decades, Steve served as a State Trapper and Pheasant Preserve Manager for South Dakota Game Fish and Parks. His work allowed him to immerse himself in the landscapes he loved so dearly. Unfortunately, health challenges eventually led him to retire from this role.
On December 15, 1973, Steve married Denise Nielsen. Together they built a life centered around family and shared experiences. Steve was a devoted husband and father who cherished time spent with his loved ones.
Steve’s hobbies reflected his adventurous spirit and creativity. He had a passion for prairie rattlesnake hunting and took pride in crafting items from rattlesnake skins. Known for blowing and making coyote calls with remarkable skill, he also enjoyed shooting deer and pheasants—a testament to his love of the outdoors. Photography was another of Steve’s interests; he had an eye for capturing moments that celebrated the beauty of nature.
Despite facing significant health challenges later in life, Steve never allowed them to diminish his zest for living or his commitment to those he cared about most. His resilience was an inspiration to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Denise; his children Katie Rochelle (Waylon), Bruce Thompson, Brian Thompson (Kami), and Barry Thompson (Jenna); and his grandchildren Kevery Thompson, Zander Rochelle, and Layna Thompson. He is also survived by his brother Loren Thompson.
Steve was predeceased by his parents Theodore and Olga as well as two grandchildren, Alexander and Zachary Rochelle.
