The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands– which includes the Fort Pierre National Grassland– have issued a fire ban due to ongoing drought conditions and an elevated risk of wildfire.
The ban applies to the Fort Pierre, Pine Ridge, Bessey, Fall River and Wall Ranger Districts. Along with the Fort Pierre National Grassland, these districts manage the Oglala Buffalo Gap Grasslands, the Bessey and Pine Ridge Ranger Districts, and the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest.
Stage 1 fire restrictions go into effect at 5am CT/6am MT Saturday (July 18, 2026) and remain in effect until conditions improve and the order is rescinded or until Dec. 31. Stage 1 fire restrictions mean:
- No open campfires or use of charcoal briquettes outside of U.S. Forest Service–provided metal fire rings in established campgrounds.
- Outdoor smoking is prohibited in areas that are not cleared of all flammable material or vegetation within a three‑foot diameter.
- The use of propane or other liquid fuel stoves within a cleared three‑square‑foot space is acceptable. Smoking is also allowed in developed recreation areas.
Additionally, motorists are encouraged:
- to ensure trailer, boat, or RV chains have proper road clearance, and
- to use caution when driving across or parking near dry vegetation.
As a reminder, spark arrestors are always required on all fuel‑injected engines on public lands, such as Off‑highway vehicles (OHVs) and generators.
These restrictions are necessary as dry vegetation, low humidity, and persistent drought have significantly increased the likelihood of rapid fire spread.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service officials ask visitors to follow posted restrictions and report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911 immediately.
