A federal judge has sentenced a 20-year-old man from Parmelee, South Dakota, convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
Justin Whiting must spend 6 months in federal prison, followed by 6 months of home confinement, then 30 months of supervised release. He must also give up possession of the firearm.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred in December 2019 where the Rosebud Sioux Law Enforcement Services responded to a call for service from St. Francis Indian School regarding Whiting. The investigation revealed Whiting had brought a handgun to school and that he was an unlawful user of marijuana.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
Whiting was immediately turned over to the custody of the US Marshals Service.
