RAPID CITY – Marlee Shorter gave Pierre its first girls tennis singles state champion in 14 years Tuesday by upsetting top seed Amber Moller of Mitchell 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the #3 singles championship match of the Girls Class A Tennis State Championships at Sioux Park. Bethany Goeden had been the last Governor girls player to win a singles state title in #5 singles in 2006. Shorter, a sophomore and the second seed, becomes the sixth Pierre singles state champion, joining Goeden, Emma Wylie in #2 singles in 2005, Sarah Winters in #3 singles in 1993, Connie Taylor in #4 singles in 1989 and Lisa Brinkman in #4 singles in 1978.
