PIERRE – The playoff portion of the bid for the Pierre Governors’ fourth straight 11AA football championship will begin with the quarterfinal round game against the Mitchell Kernels Thursday night at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Pierre, the third seed, is 6-2. Sixth-seed Mitchell is 3-6, with their six losses coming consecutively after starting the season with three wins. Pierre won at home over Mitchell 48-20 in the next-to-last week of the regular season.
Pierre Head Coach Steve Steele knows that this is the most exciting part of the season.
Steele said that Mitchell may have to pass like they did in the regular-season game.
Steele said that the Governors’ defense will want to put pressure on Kernels’ quarterback Trevor Vilhauer.
Steele feels that Pierre can be hard to stop when playing without mistakes.
Steele said that the Governors’ special teams have improved as the season has continued.
Mitchell Head Coach Kent Van Overschelde said that he has a solid team, but that it can’t quite put everything together lately.
Running back Parker Phillips leads the Kernels’ offense, but Van Overschelde said that he can be just as dangerous catching passes as running from scrimmage.
Van Overschelde said that it is a plus for Mitchell to play Pierre again so soon after the regular-season meeting.
Coverage of Thursday’s game will begin at 6:30 on the official voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7. A link to live and archived video can be found at the River 92.7 page at drgnews.com.
