Equality South Dakota has hired Angelica Mercado-Ford as the organization’s communications director.
“Angelica’s proven ability to work strategically and creatively positioned her as the perfect candidate for this new role on our team,” said Michael Hanson, president of Equality South Dakota. “Their experience as an artist and author will play an integral role in our ability to educate and empower LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit South Dakotans at such a critical time in our state,” Hanson added, “With Angelica on board, our ability to create change and propel equality forward is now bigger than ever.”
In addition to their role at Equality South Dakota, Angelica works at South Dakota Voices for Peace as the organization’s program coordinator and Washington High School as a part time debate coach. In their volunteer time, Angelica serves on the board of directors at the Transformation Project Advocacy Network and Young Democrats of America as their Outreach and Inclusion Officer. Mercado-Ford is a graduate of Briar Cliff University with a Bachelor’s degree in Art and is pursuing a masters degree in education from the University of Sioux Falls.
“I am very excited to begin my new role as communications director for Equality South Dakota (EqSD). Now more than ever, we must all work together to push for a South Dakota that embraces every individual who calls SD home,” said Mercado-Ford. “We at EqSD are working hard so that every person who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and Two-Spirit, feels safe, protected, and most importantly knows they are not alone. We also seek to empower and educate all people in SD to be effective allies as we battle tough legislation and ongoing prejudice. I encourage all people who are able to, to please consider joining our efforts- SD needs you. I know based on experience, that when we work together, there is no obstacle that we cannot overcome- so let’s get to work.”
