Avera is one of the five medical providers in South Dakota tasked with distributing the COVID-19 vaccine to specified areas in the state.
Dr. Mikel Holland is the President and Chief Medical Officer of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. He says vaccine distribution is a collaborative effort.
He says Avera St. Mary’s is responsible for providing vaccine for Hughes, Stanley, Sully and Jones counties.
Holland says the supply of COVID-19 vaccine coming in has been steady.
Holland says appointments are required to get the COVID-19 vaccine so Avera St. Mary’s staff are calling people to get them scheduled. He says at this time, there is no out-of-pocket cost to the vaccine recipient.
Holland says people who:
-
live in Hughes, Stanley, Sully or Jones counties
-
are age 75 and over
-
are a transplant patient
-
are a patient receiving cancer or dialysis treatment
-
AND have not yet been contacted to receive the COVID-19 vaccine
…..should call 605-224-3158 to schedule an appointment to get the coronavirus vaccine in Pierre.
Avera St. Mary’s Hospital continues to vaccinate groups 1A, C and D. If you are not in one of these categories, please fill out the form on Avera.org/COVID-Vaccine to be added to the vaccination waiting list. Select “other” as your priority group.
Starting Monday (Feb. 15, 2021), the State of South Dakota will drop the eligible age for receiving a COVID vaccine from the current 75 years to 70 years and older, as allocations allow.
