Carrie passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD.
Carrie (Jewett) Fasthorse was born on January 27, 1938, the fifth child of Agnes Two Lance Jewett and Joseph Jewett. Although she was born in the small Indian Village of LaPlant, SD, her parents lived most of their along the Moreau River (Often referred to as HinHan Wakpa by our people. It means Owl River in Lakota.) After Carrie was born her family moved to Whitehorse for a few years and her parents more or less lived off the land. Her father always had horses, since the main transportation in those days were team and wagon. Her parents were always interested in planting gardens so that they could put food on the table. Her dad also worked on the government poverty program, C.C.C., for a while building dams with the team and clevis.
After a while they moved to the area where the old home place is now, Promise, SD. Her grandfather, Horace Two Lance, lived there, he owned his own ranch, complete with cattle and many, many fine horses. He used to run racing horses at the local community fairs and wherever horse racing was going on. Her grandfather did not speak the English language but that did not hold him back from racing his horses wherever he wanted.
They lived in the Promise area for a few years until her father had a disagreement with the Tribal Cattle Repayment Program officials, so they packed up and moved to Mobridge, SD. They had quite a time in this town, being a predominantly white town. They had to go through quite a bit of ridicule, but as it turned out, it made their family a little tougher and closer, as they had to stick together. She went to school in Mobridge for the first seven years of her life.
Carrie gained her high school education in two different places, first the St. Elizabeth Mission School in Wakpala, for the first two years, and the Cheyenne River Boarding School for the last two years. She graduated in May of 1956, as the Valedictorian. She then attended business school at the National School of Business in Rapid City, SD, where she received her Stenographic Diploma after nine months.
She relocated to Los Angeles, CA, in March of 1957, where she met and married Frederick L Fasthorse. They had two children, a son, Paul Maurice, and a daughter, Renee Lenore. After five years Carrie and Paul divorced. Three years later Carrie married Earl DeMarrias and they had one daughter, Michelle DeVonne. They divorced shortly after she was born. Since that time Carrie remained single. She moved back and forth between southern California and South Dakota until 1971.
She was living in California when the first bad earthquake occurred. Since that time, she has resided permanently in South Dakota, preferring blizzards, tornadoes, unpredictable winds and (this type) of weather to earthquakes. She had worked for the Tribe in different capacities for approximately ten years. In November of 1978, she was hired permanently at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Branch of Roads, and had been employed quite satisfactorily and effectively by that agency. She retired in 2014.
