RAPID CITY – Pierre Governor wrestling was tied for third Friday after the second day of the Class A SDHSAA State Wrestling Championship at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Pierre and Watertown both had 113 points. Brandon Valley led with 166 points. Rapid City Stevens had 144.
Blake Judson, at 126 pounds, will wrestle for a championship Saturday. Judson won a 9-4 decision over Jackson Boonstra of Dakota Valley in the quarterfinal match Friday, then pinned Tea Area’s Wyatt Stuntebeck in 5:17 in the semifinal. Judson is now 28-4 this season and will wrestle Trason Oehme of Brandon Valley on Saturday.
At 145, Tyson Johnson will also wrestle for a title. Johnson pinned two opponents Friday, Robby Edberg of West Central in 5:20 in the quarterfinal and Zach McKee of Dell Rapids in the semifinal in 3:02. Johnson, who is 31-3, will face Chamberlain’s Gabe Skustad on Saturday.
220-pounder Regan Bollweg remained unbeaten for the season on Friday. In a quarterfinal match, Bollweg pinned Zavier Leonard of Yankton in 1:20. Bollweg then won by decision in the semifinal over Connor Wirtjes of Watertown, 3-0. Bollweg is now 25-0 and will face Owen Warren of Brandon Valley on Saturday.
Kahlor Hindman will wrestle for third place at 132 pounds after losing in a semifinal on Friday. Hayden Shaffer also will wrestle for third at 138. Preston Taylor dropped a semifinal decision at 285 to Mitchell’s Beau Foote and will wrestle for third place.
Deegan Houska, Gavin Stotts and Jacob Larson are still alive in the wrestlebacks.
Four girls’ wrestlers, Gianna Stangeland, Hattie Baldwin, Marlee Shorter and Ciara McFarling, will wrestle for championships on Saturday. Shorter won a 185-pound second-round match Friday over teammate Emalee Larson.
State wrestling coverage on 1060/107.1 KGFX will continue Saturday with reports, starting in the 11:00 AM hour, with Brian Oakland. Then, on Saturday evening, KGFX will have live play-by-play of every state championship match in Class A and Class B.
