Today (April 30) is Arbor Day and when it comes to tree care and maintenance in Pierre, the town’s Arbor Board has a lot going on.
Chairman Art Smith, with East Pierre Landscape and Garden Center, says 2nd graders received trees to plant this week.
He says Pierre has earned the Tree City USA designation for nearly 40 years.
Smith says although the emerald ash borer has not yet been identified in Pierre, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Arbor Board are preparing for when it does get here.
When emerald ash borer will be detected in Pierre is a question Smith cannot definitively answer.
If you have several ash trees on your property, Smith recommends starting to remove them one by one now and replacing them with different tree species.
