Myron Fred Flying By was born on September 7, 1962 to the Reverend Moses and Leona (Hayes) Flying By in Fort Yates, North Dakota. Myron, a twin, was born just minutes after his brother, Byron Don Flying By. They were given the Lakota names “First Eagle” and “Two Eagle.” He was born into a family of ministry, his dad, Moses, was the minister assigned to the native United Church of Christ churches on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, and Myron spent the balance of his life in Cherry Creek, South Dakota. Growing up the twins attended many church camps also known as spring meetings and mission meetings, along with the rest of their siblings, nieces and nephews.
Myron attended Cherry Creek Day School where he played basketball and was a part of the Cherry Creek Eagles ball team. During the summers the boys played hard ball, traveling to neighboring towns with the Cherry Creek team. It was then that he realized he had the talent of pitching and he enjoyed playing the position of pitcher, it wasn’t until his later years that life took him back to pitching. Myron and Byron were inseparable, you rarely saw one without the other. They attended Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School, where he played basketball and football. They would ride the country bus daily or stay in the C-EB dorms. Myron later obtained his GED and took some college courses.
There was always an independent basketball tourney going on somewhere in the area and when Byron and their nephew, Nate Benoist, were home from college at Haskell they enjoyed playing ball together and he met some life-long friends. When they were 27 years old, he lost his twin brother, Byron, which was a devastating loss to him. He continued living in the community of Cherry Creek and told the family members that he would never leave Cherry Creek because that’s where his twin brother was buried. And he never did. True to his word, he remained a life-long resident of Cherry Creek.
By this time Myron was raising a family of his own and started playing fast-pitch again. He was quite an athlete and once again took on the enjoyment of pitching for the local team and received some honors he was very proud of. He was a humble man and was very appreciative of anything that was given to him, whether it be just to visit or share a meal or a cigarette. He loved to fish and spent many hours on the banks of the Cheyenne River, fishing with family and friends.
Myron especially enjoyed being with family and friends and was always proud of his children and especially his grandchildren. He loved them all very much and enjoyed watching them excel in sports and academics.
He is survived by Teresita Blue Arm and their children: Lindsey Flying By (Joe Hale), Lyndon Aljoe Flying By, Moses Flying By, Myron Flying By Jr., Calvin Flying By, Cora Flying By, and Beau Flying By; grandchildren: Tiauna Iron Hawk, Lonnie Iron Hawk Jr., Affinity Iron Hawk, Jayshawnia Iron Hawk, Leialoha Hale, Hannah Hale, and Tayden Flying By; son, Colin Drew Marrowbone of Sioux City, IA; brothers, Wilbur Flying By Sr. of McLaughlin and Russell Flying By of Eagle Butte; sister, Menoda Flying By of Rapid City; aunts, Betty Handley of Rapid City and Clarice Miner of Eagle Butte; and many nieces and nephews and their children who all called him “Grandpa Myron.”
Preceding him in death were his parents, Moses and Leona Flying By; sisters, Cordelia Benoist, Faye Condon, and Magdeline Long Feather; twin brother, Byron Flying By; nephew, Lucas Charles Flying By; stillborn grandson, Aaron Paul Hale; and his beautiful granddaughters, Kubria Flying By and Gabriella Flying By.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Myron’s arrangements.
