The Walworth County Commission now has a July 15th opt-out deadline to consider with any plans for building a new county jail. During discussion at Tuesday’s (May 4th) meeting Commissioner Kevin Holgard said he would like to have input from county residents. Commissioner Rick Cain asked Holgard where all the details are going to come from.
Cain says letting the public decide last time was not based in law.
Cain says not having a jail and the loss of transport personnel is an issue that has to be resolved.
Cain says he likes the idea of a 48-bed facility.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the commission approved a new starting wage for jail transport staff in an effort to entice more people to apply – $18.33 starting out to $19.33 for applicants with experience.
Emergency Manager Jeff Jensen told the board he could find no penalty listings for violating burn ban resolutions. Jensen asked the commission to consider two ordinances for the county:
1) Mandatory reporting of all open burning (not to include burn barrels) to the Mobridge Police Department; and
2) Instead of issuing burn ban resolutions, for the the county to go with the recommendations of the National Weather Service.
First readings of both ordinances will be listed on the next agenda.
Treasurer – A motion was passed to direct the County Auditor to advertise for Country Treasurer position. Applications are due by May 12th. Interviews will be conducted on May 13th. Appointment will be made May 18th.
Landfill – A surprise state inspection of the county rubble site took place Monday, May 3rd, which concluded with the recommendation that the site remain closed to the public because the county currently does not have the equipment or staff to monitor it properly.
The commission passed a motion to raise the tipping fee to $4.00.
A motion passed to transfer a single axle truck from the highway department to the landfill.
Highway – The commission approved a motion for pavement striping.
Highway Superintendent Gary Byre gave a report on gravel crushing activity.
Byre would like to have an increase in staff numbers in his department to help with filling pot holes, etc.
