Thomas “Dick” Richard Dugan was born May 8th, 1933 to Emmet and Angeline (Hammon) Dugan in Le Mars, Iowa. Dick often spent time with his Aunt Marie and Uncle Floyd Riggins and his cousins in Wanblee, SD in the summertime. They lived in Le Mars, until 1944 when the family moved to Gordon, NE. In 1952, the family moved to South Dakota and leased the Cobb Ranch north of Isabel.
Dick enlisted into the United States Army in 1953 and served until 1955 where he served in the Korean War. Upon returning Dick married Emma Jean Dahl on July 28th, 1960. Dick and Emma Jean continued living with his parents and working on the Ranch with his father. In 1963 Dick and Emma Jean purchased the Harold Deans ranch 22 miles northwest of Isabel. Dick and Emma Jean raised five children. Tom, Gina, Mike, Pat and Deb.
Dick was incredibly hard working and meticulous. The cattle were a top priority. He took pride in how the ranch and the vehicles looked. You wouldn’t find a better-looking ranch in the area when it came to keeping fences in the best shape, the corrals and buildings painted. Keeping all the tractors and other equipment spotless, always maintained and ready to go so the haying season could begin making and hauling countless square bales.
Dick had a love for fast cars. He always had stories to tell about old cars and had incredible memory for the years and specific of cars. And for sure had an article for you to read if you stopped in. He took pride in keeping his vehicles washed and waxed. But he was particularly proud of his 1956 Ford Fairlaine. He kept the ’56 in tip top shape at all times with washing and waxing frequently.
Another enjoyment in Dick’s life was his animals. Early on, he loved a good saddle horse and made sure the kids had one as well. Later on, he loved his dogs and cats. He enjoyed long walks and four-wheeler rides with his dogs and taking care of his cats. Frequently taking in kitties that may not have made the winter.
Dick always looked forward to the grandkids stopping in for a visit and helping him with any chores he needed help with. Dick had many caretakers. Tom, getting him too many appointments and helping him with fixing something that wasn’t quite right. He looked forward to the meals that Gina would prepare for him, especially her roast beef that was just like moms. It wasn’t often when Dick would go out and about, but when he did, he enjoyed visiting and telling stories for hours with people. His phone calls will be greatly missed by all. Dick always asked how everyone was doing as well as how your pets were doing.
Dick’s family would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the many guardian angels in his life. Anne & Brice Roghair and family, Cindy Lensegrav, Mary Kraft, Jaimie, Sandi Paulson and Dode Ley. You all were Dad’s guardian angels, going above and beyond to always be there to lend a helping hand and made sure he had everything he needed. Your acts of kindness allowed Dad to stay on his ranch he loved so dearly. Your kindness did not go unnoticed. There may be others we failed to mention, but please know we are thankful for all of you.
