I know I’m a 90’s baby, but I still remember the days of sitting at the kitchen table to write someone a letter. We would then walk three blocks to the post office and mail the letter. A week later we would get a response. Now… you just head to your computer… type up a letter and send it off! Not the same! Not at all! It also is faster to respond as soon as you get those emails.
So while I was on vacation, I received 75 work-related emails. I chose not to respond to any of them while I was out of town. It’s great to take mental breaks whenever you can! I spent 45 minutes yesterday morning getting caught up on them and responding to them. Normally I respond within a day of receiving them. But there were a few that took a few days. Hopefully folks understand.
I stumbled across this survey by YouGov this morning asking folks how long do they wait to respond to emails? Shockley about 25% said they wait at least one day to respond. Around 10% said they would respond within an hour of receiving the email. Those folks are fast. We really want to know… where do you fall on this spectrum? Do you respond fast or wait until later?
I personally think it depends on your line of work. I know I wear a lot of hats at my job. I’m not always tied to my phone or computer. That means that my emails get checked maybe four times a day. Some of my responses might be later than some would like! If you work at a desk all day, you might be able to respond in a faster matter. I’m also guilty of opening an email, getting ready to respond. Then someone pulls me in a different direction and I forget to respond altogether! LOL, I think we’ve all been there.
