When the Memorial Day weekend begins on Friday, so do new sections to Pierre’s City Fire Ordinance that regulate the size and location of outdoor fire places and fire pits.
Fire chief Ian Paul recapped the five new sections for the Pierre City Commission at last night’s (Tues.) meeting.
Commissioner Jamie Huizenga asked Paul about the process for calling in an objectionable or offensive fire.
Pierre resident Mike Mehlhaff said requiring fire pits or fire places to be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustibles, infringes on what people can do on their property. He used his property as an example.
Mehlhaff also raised concern about what he calls a vague definition of what may be an offensive or objectionable fire.
Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff cast the one vote against approving the new regulations.
The new regulations do not apply to gas fire places and gas fire pits because they pose less risk than a wood burning fire because they are less likely to rekindle or throw embers.
