The National Weather Service says the Grassland Fire Danger Index will be in the “moderate” category this afternoon (Wed.) west of the Missouri River in parts of central South Dakota, while the danger is in the “high” category in the same area on the east side of the River.
Some counties included in the “moderate” area are Buffalo, Stanley, Hughes, Jones, Lyman, Dewey and Corson. Among the counties in the “high” fire danger risk category are Sully, Hyde, Hand, Potter, Walworth, Campbell, McPherson and Edmunds.
According to the National Weather Service, a fire will start easily and has the potential to spread quickly due to a combination of temperatures topping out around 100 degrees, low afternoon humidity and occasionally breezy conditions.
NWS says isolated weak storms are possible this evening/overnight. The main threat is gusty winds and lightning– since these storms are expected to generate little in the way of moisture.
Tomorrow’s anticipated Grassland Fire Danger Index puts most of South Dakota at the “low” or “moderate” level.
