When I was little, I swore I was going to go to the Olympics doing something. I thought maybe soccer or archery, but my body couldn’t take elite training much longer after college. The other day, I stumbled across this article from Men’s Health talking about 40 rules the Olympic athletes have to follow. I dug a little deeper into it and found out I didn’t know about a lot of these rules. I’m putting my favorite 28, but you should go look at the rest because they are so interesting.
- Golfers have to sign their own scorecards
- Figure Skaters can’t show too much skin with their uniforms
- In Track, you can’t hold hands as you cross the finish line
- Cyclist can’t have socks higher than mid-calfs
- Gymnast have to pay for any score challenges and they cost around $300
- In beach volleyball, they flip a coin to determine the color of their uniforms
- If a rhythmic gymnast loses a prop, they can’t retrieve it. They have to continue without it
- Water polo players can’t grab each other’s groins
- Gymnasts can’t have scoop neck or v neck uniforms
- Beach Volleyball players uniforms have to meet certain size requirements
- You are only allowed to get one finger food item while eating in the Village
- Athletes can’t smoke in the village
- Water polo players have toenail checks before competitions
- Swimmers are allowed to use grease, but they can’t use “too much”
- Fencers can’t leave the field otherwise they must forfeit
- If a world record is broke by a swimmer they have to fax in the record themselves
- You can dunk in basketball, but can’t hang on the rim
- The person who swings second in a hockey fight get the lessor of the penalty
- Figure skaters aren’t allowed to have backflips in their routines
- BMX riders have to tuck in their shirts
- Athletes can’t post photos of the fields and backstage on social media
- Depending on the country you are competing for determines if you can drink in the village or out of the village
- Women skaters have to wear skirts
- Men skaiters have to wear pants
- Athletes can have endorsements, but they can’t talk about them while at the games
- Athletes aren’t allowed to protest at all while competing or at Olympic sponsored events
- Gymnasts can’t have colored nail polish
- Track and Field Athletes don’t have to wear shoes they are optional while competing
- Boxers have to be clean-shaved
