Alabama’s Mark Daniels Jr. took the lead in the Bassmaster Elite Fishing Series on Lake Oahe Saturday and he added to that lead yesterday (Sun.).
The second-year Elite Series pro brought 17 pounds, 6 ounces to the scales yesterday for a three-day total of 56 pounds, 6 ounces. Daniels has an almost 5.5 pound cushion going into the championship today (Mon.).
Daniels said fishing was tougher yesterday because there’s fishing pressure in the area. He says he thinks the bass are “starting to get hip to what’s going on. I had a lot of fish swim up and look at my bait and not bite today. The first day they would come eat it while it was sinking.”
During the first three days of the tournament, Elites have caught a total of 1171 smallmouth bass weighing a total of 2552 pounds, 3 ounces.
The field was cut to the Top 12 anglers for today’s championship round and a chance at the $100-thousand first prize. The final weigh-in will be held at Steamboat Park in Pierre at 3:45pm.
