Based on July 1 conditions, South Dakota’s 2021 winter wheat production is forecast at 29.9 million bushels, down 14% from last year’s crop, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average yield is forecast at 44 bushels per acre, down 14 bushels from 2020. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 680,000 acres, up 13% from a year ago.
Other spring wheat crop is forecast at 17.5 million bushels, down 51% from last year. Average yield is forecast at 25 bushels per acre, down 22 bushels from 2020. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 700,000 acres, down 8% from a year ago.
Oat production is forecast at 4.24 million bushels, down 61% from last year. Average yield is forecast at 53 bushels per acre, down 24 bushels from 2020. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 80,000 acres, down 43% from a year ago.
