A 43-year-old Pierre, South Dakota, man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Michael Schmidt pled not guilty to the Indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250-thousand fine. Restitution may also be ordered.
The Indictment alleges that Schmidt, having been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, knowingly possessed a .22 long rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun, which both had been shipped and transported in interstate and foreign commerce.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing
together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce
violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives, the Lyman County Sheriff’s Office and the US Forest
Service.
Schmidt was released on bond pending trial, which has been set for August
(21).
