Some highlights from Tuesday’s (Aug. 17th) Walworth County Commission meeting:
A public hearing was held during the zoning and planning portion of the meeting for the first reading of a cannabis ordinance for establishment of dispensaries, with the planning and zoning board recommending to the commission to take action. Later in the meeting, the board acting as the commission, approved the first reading. They also approved the first reading of a licensing ordinance for the cannabis dispensaries. A special meeting will be held August 31st to approve the second readings and get them published before the October 4th deadline.
Public hearings regarding the jail opt-out were scheduled and will be held September 1st in the courtroom in Selby, September 2nd at the Hoven Country Club, September 3rd at the Edge Event Center in Mobridge, and September 8th at the Akaska Community Center. All meetings will start at 7:00pm.
From Walworth County Emergency Manager Jeff Jensen, a full scale exercise on how to respond to a hazardous material release will be conducted on September 8th at the Mobridge fire hall. Fire departments, law enforcement, and Burlington Northern will all be participating.
The commission approved changing transport personnel from hourly to salary beginning August 29th in an effort to reduce overtime.
