PIERRE – Pierre Governor Soccer swept its home openers Thursday at the PILC Soccer Complex. The Governor girls were 1-0 winners over Sioux Falls Roosevelt, then the fifth-ranked Pierre boys took a 4-2 win behind two goals from Cole Peterson.
Avery Davis scored the only goal of the girls match in the 70th minute, but Governor goalkeeper Jenna Gehring was the best player on the field. As Roosevelt controlled play most of the way, Gehring made 12 saves on 17 Rough Riders shots, including two in the last seconds to preserve the win that made the Governor girls 3-0.
On goals by Peterson in the 10th minute and Rylan Derry in the 13th minute, set up by a Peterson free kick, the Governor boys led 2-0 at halftime. Devon Flottmeyer made the Governor lead 3-0 in the 50th minute. Roosevelt tallied with Brayden Kills-A-Hundred off a corner kick in the 63rd minute, then moved to within a goal at 3-2 thanks to Griffin Groos in the 68th minute. Then, the Governors sealed the win on Peterson’s second goal in the 69th minute after he intercepted a bad Roosevelt pass. Pierre improved to 2-1.
Both Pierre teams will next play on Thursday, August 26 at Sturgis.
